Weekly Newsletter   Investigations in Science 7   September 20, 2019   Announcements...   It was wonderful getting to meet so many of you last night at BTSN. If you were unable to make it and would like a copy of my presentation, please feel free to email me and I’d be happy to share it with you. STEM Opportunity: Black Rocket on Dec. 14th at Montgomery College Germantown Campus ocket.pdf   What We Did This Week… This week, we began learning about diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane. Selectively permeable means that some molecules can move through the membrane while others cannot (think of a tea bag in water). We then took a closer look at osmosis by completing a carrot lab: Honey, I shrunk the carrots. The lab had two baby carrots, one beaker of fresh water, and one beaker of salt water. Students weighed each carrot before putting the carrot in the water (they tied a piece of string to the carrot before adding it to the water). The carrots sat in the water overnight and then students weighed the carrots to see how they changed. Then we started looking at the parts of a cell, organelles. We drew both a plant and animal cell. We talked about the function of each organelle and completed a lot of practice so they would excel at cells. Today, students competed in our annual Olympic games, called Organellympics. Teams worked together on different events that represented an organelle. Points were awarded for winning the game and for being able to identify the correct organelle the game represents.
