  Concept and Importance The study of agricultural marketingcomprises all the operations, and theagencies conducting them, involved in themovement of farm-produced foods, rawmaterials and their derivatives, such astextiles, from the farms to the finalconsumers, and the effects of suchoperations on farmers, middlemen andconsumers. Agricultural marketing is thestudy of all the activities, agencies andpolicies involved in the procurement of farminputs by the farmers and the movement of agricultural products from the farms to theconsumers. The agricultural marketingsystem is a link between the farm and thenon-farm sectors. It involves all the aspectsof market structure or system, bothfunctional and institutional, based ontechnical and economics considerations, andincludes pre and post-harvest operations,assembling, grading, storage, transportationand distribution. A dynamic and growing,agricultural sector requires fertilisers,pesticides, farm equipments, machinery,diesel, electricity and repair services whichare produced and supplied by the industryand non-farm enterprises. The expansion inthe size of farm output stimulates forwardlinkages by providing surpluses or food andnatural fibres which require transportation,storage, milling or processing, packaging andretailing to the consumers. Importance Agricultural marketing plays an importantrole not only in stimulating production andconsumption, but in accelerating the paceof economic development. The agriculturemarketing system plays a dual role ineconomic development in countries whoseresources are primarily agricultural.Increasing demands for money with which topurchase other goods leads to increasingsensitivity to relative prices on the part of the roducers and secialization in the Agri-Knowledge(AgriculturalMarketing)
