1 AARW NEWSLETTER  A quarterly publication of Anjamma Agi Reddy Engineering College for Women, Hyderabad     Issue No.1, January 2011 From the Principal’s Desk    Anjamma Agi Reddy Engineering College for Women was established in 2010 by Mahaveer Education Society, who have been running Mahaveer Institute of Science and Technology for over a decade. The new college for women has been named after the illustrious parents of the Chairman Sri S Sudarshan Reddy garu and Secretary Sri S Surender Reddy garu. A newsletter is  being brought out to serve as a platform for creative expression by students and staff members of the new college. All are invited to submit their srcinal articles. Internet downloads have no value for us. I take this opportunity to draw the attention of students to some issues of great importance. Firstly, I want all students to take the best care of their health. The key to good health is a good diet and adequate exercise . Ensure that your diet consists of a wide variety of leafy vegetables (  Palaak, Ponnaganti, Menthi, Bachali  etc), a mixture of oils (sun flower, gingelly, ground nut, rice bran, olive etc) and as many fruit as possible. Eat carrots, cucumber,  beet root and tomato as salad. Avoid chat   and deep fried stuff. Never lose an opportunity to walk or climb or play. Use the staircase instead of the elevator for going to higher floors in the college. Walk down the short distance from the college to the main road instead of hopping into a seven-seater or minivan at your college gate. After diet and exercise, attendance at college is most important. Any good teacher will be motivated to do better, if his or her class is full. Aim for 100% attendance instead of the mandatory 75%. It is well established that the performance of a student in the examinations is directly proportional to his or her attendance. If you aim for 100%, and then you fall sick unexpectedly, you will still be safe with over 75%. Study your subjects every day right from Day 1. Do not wait for announcement of the examinations. If you study well, you will have a good degree in hand, which will ensure a good job. You will be empowered if you put in efforts right now. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by the TV channels or movies, except for  Discovery  or  History , Geography  channels and Gyan Darshan  channel. In this issue, we have an essay Woman power   by Ms. Hashmat Sultana, Mother  , a poem  by Ms. B Jyothsna and For Ever  , another poem by Ms. T Sanjana. Students should be aware of the developments in society, science, technology and environment. From Far and Near offers some of these. Wish you a happy new year! -   Dr. Palanki Balakrishna   2 Woman Power Once upon a time, women were considered as weak, sacrificing, powerless, home making etc. As the days passed, women made others change their view of women. They have shown wome as challenging, courageous, empowered, able to face any critical situation and the same time endowed with kindness. They recognizes their rightful place in society and with self esteem. Women feel that ‘a well beaten track is not the best path’ and started finding teir own ways of reaching their destinations. People say that a woman is like a leaf. Whether the leaf falls on the thorn or the thorn falls on the leaf, it is the leaf that is destroyed and it is the woman who suffers. In my view, when a leaf is destroyed, it leads to the growth of a branch at that place. Women have started broadening their vision, outlook and philosophy. As a tree grows against gravity, the woman contributes in spite of pressure of circumstances. Until and unless you destroy a tree completely, it does not stop growing. Even though the seeds are dry, they have the capacity to germinate and the plant grows again. Mother Teresa, a great servant of humanity left this world but continues to live in our hearts. Woman is like a river which does not know whether it reaches its destination (sea) or not,  but if will not stop flowing, whatever may be the hurdles in its path. Even when it dries up, its  path is still visible. Rani Lakshmi Bai is a great woman who did not know whether India would attain freedom, but she fought on till her last breath and became a role model for courage. A woman’s thoughts are deep like the ocean, high like the sky and countless like the stars and blossoming like a flower. One such great woman was Indira Gandhi. Through sheer determination and will power, women piloted aeroplanes, explored outer space, fought wars in the army, led the nation as Governor or Prime Minister. Now the entire universe is within their reach. A bird collects all possible tiny materials to make its nest comfortable for its offspring. Similarly, a woman makes all possible efforts to provide food, health and security to her family and to the society. One can readily proclaim: There is no life without women. Women’s empowerment  begins with her education. Once educated, a woman will certainly shine in her career and life, just as radium continues to glow even after the source of light is no longer there. -   Hashmath Sultana, I B.Tech, ECE What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do - John Ruskin Do not wait for the ship to come in. Row out to meet it - Jackson Brown Jr.   3 Welcoming New Year!   4 Mother From the day you are born, She treats you like a rose without thorn She decorates you in her garden,  Never considers you a burden.
