A mix of urban and rural, with a large number of horse ranches, the average household income has risen from $49,081 to $68,000 as of 2017! Historically the city had been an outpost for the pony express and a stop for the Soutern California Railroad. Once the tracks washed out, the construction of the I-15 freeway brought more urban growth to Wildomar. Bordered by a mountain range on the west and rolling hills to the east, the city is nestled within a valley and has a wide variety of plants. From coastal sage scrub, chaparral and poppies on the hills, to sycamores and ferns along the rivers. Despite having triple digit weather in the summer, there is relatively low humidity and the ocean is 45 minutes away, lending to cooler temperatures than nearby desert areas. They called the lake Entengvo Wumoma, which means Hot Springs by the Little Sea. Their pictographs can be found on rocks on the Ortega Mountains, and some are on display at the Lake Elsinore Historical Society Museum. The Spanish were the next inhabitants, with Don Agustin Machado buying the lake and land in His adobe house became a part of the Butterfield stage route and still stands by Grand Avenue today. In 1883, the city is bought by the same founders of Wildomar and they rename it Elsinore. It does not become Lake Elsinore until 1972, when the citizens voted to change the name. Economically, Lake Elsinore has seen a 46.2% of jobs regained, and the housing market has increased by 38.1%. Household incomes have increased from +/-$41,134 in 2000 to $67,913 as of 2017.
